Overview
Curtis brings over 30 years of experience representing clients in the areas of Construction Law, Civil Litigation, Real Property Law, and Insurance Law.

In his Construction Law practice, Curtis represents subcontractors, suppliers, equipment rental companies, worker staffing companies, general contractors, commercial property owners and residential owners, in Oregon and Washington.  His work in both states includes drafting and negotiating construction contracts on both large and small projects, pursuing or defending claims for payment, including construction lien claims on private projects and payment bond claims on state and federal government projects, and advising construction industry clients on day-to-day matters affecting their businesses.  He has substantial experience in construction litigation matters, representing construction clients in lawsuits or in arbitration proceedings.  He regularly achieves successful outcomes for his clients, either through a verdict from a jury, a decision from a judge, a decision from an arbitrator, or a settlement that is favorable to his client.

Curtis's Civil Litigation practice is broad and varied, in both Oregon and Washington.  He has achieved verdicts or decisions for his clients in construction lien foreclosure trials; construction defect trials; a two and a half week trial involving the transfer of real property; multiple jury trials defending clients in tort lawsuits; trials involving Will disputes; trials involving covenants not to compete and unfair competition claims; trials involving claims for breach of lease; trials related to business disputes; bankruptcy court trials; tax court trials; trials related to non-payment of debts; family law trials including child custody trials; trials involving disputes over ownership of personal property; and trials involving claims against governmental entities.

In his Real Property Law practice in Oregon and Washington, Curtis has obtained successful results for clients in cases involving a wide range of disputes, including disputes over real property purchases, leases, easements, boundary line disputes, adverse possession claims, claims of nuisance, claims of trespass, and real property partition claims.

Curtis's Insurance Law practice includes many years of experience in defending clients in Oregon and Washington who have been sued for negligence or other torts.  He has successfully defended insurance clients at trial, with favorable jury verdicts and court decisions.  He also regularly advises insurance industry clients on matters involving insurance policies, and laws and regulations affecting the insurance industry.

Curtis has an AV® rating from Martindale-Hubbell, an honor awarded to only approximately 10% of lawyers nationwide.  That honor is given to those lawyers who are ranked by other lawyers and judges as having the highest professional ability and highest ethical standards.

Before joining Sussman Shank LLP, Curtis was a partner for over 18 years with Duggan Schlotfeldt & Welch PLLC in Vancouver, Washington.  Prior to that time, he was a partner with Lindstedt, Buono & Welch P.C. in Portland, Oregon.

Curtis has been active in his community, coaching youth team sports for 17 years, coaching high school Mock Trial teams for eight years, and serving as a Cub Scout leader.  He was involved in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts as a youth.

He has been very active in State and local legal organizations in Oregon and Washington.  He has been a member of the Clark County Superior Court Bench/Bar Committee since 2012.  He has been a member of the Oregon State Bar Construction Law Section Executive Committee since 2012, and is currently the Chair-Elect of that committee.  He has also served on the Multnomah County Bar Professionalism Committee.  He is a regular contributor to legal education programs and to legal and trade publications.

Curtis is also the former President of the Southwest Washington Contractors Association.
