Barry P. Caplan Celebrates 50 Years of Practice

Sussman Shank Partner Barry Caplan is celebrating 50 years of practicing law. He views this as just a part of the journey, not the destination. 

A native Oregonian, Barry joined the Oregon State Bar in 1965 and joined the firm in 1968, becoming Sussman Shank's fourth lawyer.  He became a partner in 1970, serving as the firm's first managing partner from 1980-1986.  Barry has been instrumental to the management of the firm for decades. 

"Barry is a great asset to the firm," said Managing Partner Tom Stilley.  "He represents clients with the highest level of integrity.  We congratulate him on this 50-year milestone." 

Barry received his B.A. in Business Administration from The University of Washington and an LL.B from the University of California at Berkeley.  He worked for three years in the Multnomah County District Attorney's office before joining Sussman Shank. 

As Barry reflects on his career:  "I consider myself particularly fortunate to have had the support of my wife of 53 years, Barbara, and of my kids and grandkids, to spend the time necessary to experience a successful legal career.  However, I am equally fortunate to be a member of a law firm which also recognizes and encourages a proper balance of work/home/family.  Thus, I have been able to enjoy my kids', and grandkids', growing up moments and also spend some time at golf, travel, and the Oregon Coast as I proceeded through my career." 

Barry continues to practice law full time, focusing on commercial business matters, including business restructuring and bankruptcy.  He co-chairs the the firm's Banking and Finance Group and has represented many commercial lenders over the years on a variety of loan-related matters.
