Professional Experience
Martin has over 25 years of in-depth legal experience and holds a diverse range of skills in the areas of commercial litigation, collections and bankruptcy. He has tried numerous cases before judges and juries and is entirely comfortable representing clients both in and out of the courtroom. Asked to describe his overall practice, he would say he helps clients solve complex and multifaceted financial problems.
Martin concentrates his practice on bankruptcy and insolvency cases and represents debtors, creditors and bankruptcy trustees in contested and adversary bankruptcy cases in Oregon, Washington, and throughout the nation, with a focus on preference, fraudulent transfer, and other bankruptcy avoidance issues.
He enjoys a mixture of both large, medium and small cases. He represents national lending institutions, represented the liquidating agent in the national bankruptcy case of Consolidated Freightways, and the receiver in a multistate federal receivership action which early on satisfied the secured creditor's claim in excess of $42M. Recently, Martin has also been involved with several high profile insolvency cases involving statutory agricultural producer's liens under both Washington and Oregon law.
He also represents non-consumer individuals and small business owners on both collection and insolvency matters which, along with his trustee work, affords him a broad perspective on the bankruptcy process and how a particular client's situation may fit within the system.
In addition, Martin teaches the Bankruptcy Law class in Portland Community College's paralegal program.
Prior to joining Sussman Shank, Martin was a Partner at the New Mexico law firm Hinkle, Hensley, Shanor & Martin, L.L.P. He is licensed to practice law in both Oregon and Washington.
